The main use for these saws is to cut spearing holes in the ice. The tip of the saw or a regular ice auger is used to chisel a hole big enough to get the blade started. Once started, the blade cuts quickly through the ice. When the hole is finished the ice slab is just pushed off to the side under the ice. The ice saw can also be used to cut oblong or oval holes for normal ice fishing.
